Storage Shed being built

It was always our goal to build a home on Starlings Island.  Over the years several improvements were made in preparation for construction.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has also built an erosion control jetty on the island which is of great benefit.

Septic System -
A septic system for a 3 bedroom house (450 Gallons Per Day) was completed in March of 2003.  While the plans had called for a 1,000 gallon tank, the septic system was constructed with a 1,250 gallon tank to allow a longer life for the system. A Bio-Diffuser system by ADS was used for the drain field instead of a conventional gravel and pipe system. The system has been approved by the Health Department.

Corps of Engineers Jetty Project -
The Corps of Engineers created a channel into Saxis harbor in the 1940's and has needed to perform dredging operations every few years to keep it open.  Research has shown that the prevailing currents push sand and sediment in a Northerly direction which leads to filling of the channel.  Due to the high cost and environmental disruption associated with dredging the Corps of Engineers has designed and installed a Jetty that originates on the Island and runs in a Westerly direction for approximately 400 feet.  Construction of this jetty will trap the moving sand and over time a sandy beach is expected to develop on the Island.  The Jetty will provide the Island with substantial protection from erosion.  Additionally the Corps has stabilized the Northwest corner of the Island and performed some habitat restoration.  The photo shows an early plan for the jetty, but funding cuts altered the project's final layout. The jetty, as built, runs northwest in a straight line from where the three lines on the photo intersect. The jetty walls shown on running along the shore were not built, but the corner itself was stabilized with rock.
